Onshore vs offshore: which path to choose

Onshore wind offers better work-life balance — technicians typically work daytime shifts at accessible locations, returning home each evening. Offshore wind offers significantly higher pay (typically 20–30% premium over onshore equivalents) but requires offshore survival training, periods away from home on rotation, and comfort with working at height in challenging marine conditions.

For engineers early in their wind careers, onshore experience first is typically recommended — it develops core turbine knowledge in a less hazardous environment before the additional complexity of marine operations. Most offshore wind employers prefer candidates with 2+ years of onshore wind experience or equivalent offshore oil and gas background.

The UK wind energy hotspots

Offshore wind operations are concentrated along the east coast — from the Humber through to Aberdeen — reflecting the location of the UK's major offshore wind farms. The Aberdeen area has emerged as a key hub for offshore wind O&M expertise, leveraging skills transferred from the North Sea oil and gas industry. Onshore wind is most active in Scotland, Wales, and northern England, where wind resource and planning approvals are stronger.
