How to become a net zero consultant in the UK in 2026

Net zero consulting is one of the fastest growing professional services specialisms in the UK. Here's exactly what it involves, who pays for it, and how to get in.

What net zero consultants actually do

Net zero consultants help organisations develop, implement, and credibly communicate strategies to achieve net zero carbon emissions. In practice this spans a wide range of work: carbon footprint assessments, science-based target setting, net zero transition planning, supply chain emissions analysis (scope 3), carbon reduction programme management, and preparation for mandatory climate disclosure reporting (TCFD, ISSB).

The clients include FTSE 100 companies managing investor pressure and regulatory compliance, mid-market companies preparing for mandatory reporting as thresholds lower, financial institutions assessing climate risk in portfolios, and public sector organisations delivering against government net zero commitments.

Routes into net zero consulting

There are two primary routes. The first is transitioning from an established consulting background โ€” management consultants, financial advisers, and strategy professionals who add sustainability qualifications and pivot into the specialism. This route offers faster entry to senior levels because the consulting skills (client management, slide preparation, project delivery) are already established.

The second is building from an environmental or technical background โ€” environmental scientists, engineers, or sustainability managers who develop the consulting and commercial skills to move from in-house roles into advisory. This route takes longer to reach senior levels but provides stronger technical credibility for complex technical mandates.

Qualifications that open doors

The qualifications most valued by UK net zero consulting employers in 2026 are the IEMA Practitioner and Member grades, the CFA Institute ESG Certificate for financially-oriented roles, and the Climate Bonds Initiative certification for green finance mandates. SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) practitioner training is increasingly referenced in job descriptions for corporate net zero advisory roles.
