Carbon accounting is the fastest growing specialism in UK sustainability — and the most accessible for professionals transitioning from finance or environmental backgrounds.

What is carbon accounting?

Carbon accounting is the systematic measurement, verification, and reporting of an organisation's greenhouse gas emissions across all three scopes: direct emissions from owned sources (scope 1), indirect emissions from purchased energy (scope 2), and all other indirect emissions in the value chain (scope 3). The discipline combines financial accounting methodology with environmental science, requiring both numerical rigour and understanding of emissions factors, measurement protocols, and reporting frameworks.

The driver for explosive demand growth is regulation. The UK's mandatory TCFD reporting requirements, the FCA's Sustainability Disclosure Requirements, and the ISSB's IFRS S2 climate standard have collectively created a legal obligation for large UK organisations to measure and report their carbon emissions — and to have those measurements verified by qualified professionals.

The existing skills — systematic measurement, internal controls, materiality assessment, and audit trail management — transfer directly to carbon accounting methodology. Adding the GHG Protocol training (typically 3–5 days) and IEMA Certificate (3–6 months part-time) is sufficient to enter the field at a level commensurate with existing seniority.
