Types of solar energy jobs in the UK

Solar PV Installer

The most in-demand solar role in the UK. Installers fit solar panels on residential and commercial properties. MCS certification is required to work on grid-connected systems. Most installers are self-employed or work for regional installation companies.

Solar Farm Technician / Operations & Maintenance

O&M technicians maintain utility-scale solar farms across the UK. This is a growing permanent employment sector — major solar farms require full-time teams. Roles are concentrated in the South West, East Anglia and Scotland.

Solar Project Manager

Oversees solar farm development from planning through to commissioning. Requires experience in construction project management and ideally knowledge of DNO connection processes and planning permission.

Solar Design Engineer

Uses specialist software (PVsyst, AutoCAD, SketchUp) to design solar installations. Strong growth as commercial and industrial rooftop solar expands rapidly.

Solar Sales & Business Development

One of the highest-paid entry points into the industry. Companies need people who can sell solar to homeowners, commercial property owners and industrial businesses.
