Scotland is the renewable energy capital of the UK โ€” and one of the most ambitious clean energy nations in the world. With a target to generate the equivalent of 100% of its electricity demand from renewables by 2030, Scotland offers more renewable energy career opportunities per capita than anywhere else in the British Isles. From Aberdeen's offshore wind hub to the Highlands' onshore wind farms and Orkney's tidal energy pioneers, here's your complete guide to green energy jobs in Scotland.

Scotland's renewable energy hotspots

Aberdeen
Offshore Wind Capital
The "energy capital of Europe" is transitioning from oil & gas to offshore wind. Home to major offshore wind developers, subsea engineering firms and the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre.
Edinburgh
Policy & Finance Hub
Scotland's capital hosts government energy agencies, green finance institutions and renewable energy consultancies. Scottish Enterprise and Zero Waste Scotland are based here.
Glasgow
Engineering & Manufacturing
Growing renewable energy manufacturing base. SSE Renewables and ScottishPower have major operations here. Strong supply chain for offshore wind components.
Highlands & Islands
Onshore Wind & Tidal
Home to some of the UK's largest onshore wind farms. Orkney is a global leader in tidal and wave energy. Field technician and O&M roles concentrated here.

Types of renewable energy jobs available in Scotland

Offshore Wind

Scotland is central to the UK's offshore wind expansion โ€” Scotwind alone awarded development rights for 25GW of new capacity. Thousands of offshore wind technician, engineering, project development and O&M roles are being created, with Aberdeen as the primary hub. Oil & gas transferees are highly sought after for their offshore skills.

Onshore Wind

Scotland has more onshore wind capacity than any other part of the UK. Wind turbine technicians, site managers and O&M engineers are in constant demand across Highland, Argyll, South Lanarkshire and the Southern Uplands. Vestas, Siemens Gamesa and SSE all operate large Scottish maintenance operations.

Hydro Power

Scotland has over 1,500 hydro schemes ranging from micro-hydro to large pumped storage. Hydro engineers, civil engineers and operations managers are needed to maintain and expand this capacity. SSE and Scottish Hydro are the primary employers.

Tidal & Wave Energy

Scotland โ€” particularly Orkney โ€” is the global leader in tidal and wave energy. Nova Innovation, Orbital Marine and Atlantis Resources are pioneering commercial tidal energy. A small but growing number of highly specialised engineering roles.

Green Hydrogen

Scotland has world-class green hydrogen ambitions, using its abundant renewable electricity to produce clean hydrogen for export. HyWindScotland and multiple industrial projects are creating new specialist roles in hydrogen production and infrastructure.

Oil & gas to renewable energy transition in Scotland

Aberdeen's oil & gas workforce has highly transferable skills for renewable energy. The North Sea Transition Authority actively supports reskilling, and many employers specifically seek ex-O&G candidates for their offshore experience, safety culture and engineering expertise.
